staining over existing finish to darken
Anybody have any experience here. I have used gel stain hoever it very time consuming, any other ways

Not sure what your staining here... If the existing finish has any sealer like polyurethane, then you need to strip it down and restain. Otherwise, you should be good to go. I haven't use a gel stain yet, but a wiping stain could benefit you.
